members of the Scientific Committee of the next MACS conference! It is a
great honor!
As you can see, we have created the macs_scicom(a)lists.ek.hun-ren.hu
e-mail address for the scientific committee to facilitate communication.
I would like to ask the committee members for help on some things, which
you can read below, but first I would like to ask the scientific
committee for their opinion on another issue. Laetitia has just informed
me that the French Catalysis Conference will also be organized exactly
on the same date as MACS 2026. I can't imagine MACS without French
colleagues. Do you think we should reschedule?
Some of you have indicated that there is not enough time to organize the
conference until May. If we reschedule the conference, should we
postpone it by 1-2 weeks or a year? I am open to accepting any decision
of the board!
And here are some of the things I would like to ask the scientific
committee for help with. Whatever the decision on the previous question,
your answers will definitely be useful in the following topics.
1. Please suggest a plenary speaker. So far, we have received two
recommendations.
2. We would be grateful if you could write a single sentence
explaining why you consider the MACS conferences valuable, or share a
brief comment on your previous experiences. We plan to feature these on

Thanks a lot for your detailed message and your efforts to organize the next MACS.
According to the urgency of your preliminary question (targeted dates), I only focus on
this point in the present reply. Once the date will be fixed, I will answer on the other
important points.
As I express it to Tamas in a recent email, I think that it becomes more and more risky to
maintain the date on May 2026, even if 2026 was originally not a bad year (no Europacat,
no ICC...). However, it seems to me that we are too short to make sure that the community
will be informed and prior to this to select the keynote speakers who will motivate the
community to attend.
So, I would suggest to post-pone by about one year in order to identify the best dates
minimizing overlaps with other 2026 conferences in the field.

Dear Tamas, dear all,
I do agree with Pascal to postpone the conference by one year. As (co)organizer of 2
previous MACS symposiums I do see the necessity and challenge to define a new and
refreshed profile and forge this into a consistent and attractive conference program.
Specifically, we do need to attract a new type of audience.
Let us thus first agree on a new date and then start the thought process on the content.

Dear Tamás
I have no objection to moving the MACS to another date, as this could allow us to benefit
from a larger and more representative number of participants.
1) Plenary speaker: I would suggest including someone from the industry, who could present
practical applications and challenges related to the use of sulfide catalysts in various
fields. Perhaps inviting a representative from Haldor Topsoe could be an option, since
they are active in both hydrorefining and renewables.
2) Although I have been following the MACS congress since the begining, I was only able to
attend the one held in Satillieu, France. I have the best impression of the event, which
offered a high-quality and well-focused scientific program.
5) Sponsors: I would suggest primarily targeting catalyst and process licensor companies,
such as Haldor Topsoe, Axens, IFPEN, and Shell, as well as equipment suppliers like Vinci,
hte, and Avantium, in addition to European and national funding agencies. Petrobras does
sponsor scientific events, usually those focused on Oil & Gas Production and Refining
held in Brazil. I will look into the possibilities, although the response was not positive
for the last edition of MACS.

Tamas,
I would shift MACS, as National Meetings are difficult to move.
Many of the last years developments outside industry were in the area of electrocatalysis
(mostly H2 generation), but some interesting developments are also found in MOFs (U.
Chicago) and in molecularly defined structures. From Industry side the ExxonMobil Family
of catalysts seem to be leading (would approach all four, XOM, Chevron, HT and Shell, see
what the answers are).
From academia, Rachit Khare would have an interesting story on molecular clusters.

Dear Tamas,
Even if the FCCAT is not an absolute must-go for french researchers, it
would certainly pump out a considerable number, so I think MACS should
be re-scheduled.
As with suggestions, even if HDS not fashionable anymore, methodology is
still developping. For example, there are systematic and cutting-edge
works on XAS imaging of preparation steps of sulfide catalysts by
Valerie Briois and coll from SOLEIL synchrotron.
Beside obvious widespread use in electrochemistry, I think sulfides are
now getting a second breath in the heterogeneous catalysts for the
reactions involving oxygenates such as (R)WGS.
